How To Spot Integrity

I am one of ‘those’ people who watched our former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s appearance in front of the Parliamentary Privileges Committee to answer questions about whether he lied to parliament. I sat there thinking about integrity, the importance of it and how perilous a commodity it seems to be in some aspects of public life. As a result, I thought I’d put together a list of the behaviours that show me whether someone has integrity. I have always believed that integrity is the most important quality of human beings and certainly of leaders. I hope that this might help in a time of ambiguity and challenge:

1. TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR ACTIONS

2. PUTTING OTHERS’ NEEDS ABOVE THEIR OWN

3. OFFERING TO HELP OTHERS IN NEED

4. GIVING OTHERS THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT

5. CHOOSING HONESTY IN ALL THINGS

6. SHOWING RESPECT TO EVERYONE

7. MANIFESTING HUMILITY

8. BEING ABLE TO ADMIT THEY’RE WRONG

9. SHOWING REGULAR RELIABILITY

10. CONVEYING TRUE KINDNESS

A final word from Richard

If something in this landed — sit with that for a moment.

Everything I write comes from the same place: twenty-five years of watching what happens when people are given back the curiosity and courage their systems trained out of them.

In schools. In boardrooms. On six continents.

The rooms change. The human truth doesn’t.

If you want more of that thinking — the kind that tends to resurface at 2am and in meetings that were supposed to be about something else — you can subscribe below.

And if your organisation is ready to stop squandering what it already has, I’d love to bring that conversation into your room.
